I also noticed that increasing the pre-gain on the individual low mid and high bands vs increasing the gain on the master pre-gain results in less distortion as well. It has a unique and simple workflow, a fantastic step sequencer and piano roll, and other great features that let you output. FL Studio is very good for mixing and mastering as well as the others, if not better. Using the soft saturation to clip the audio rather than the limiter on the master band sounds much more transparent to my ear and I am able to get much more loudness before any obvious distortion. If you’re still wondering whether FL Studio is the right choice for mixing and mastering, you don’t need to look for any other DAW. Using a single band compressor will affect the whole spectrum on your track. While most compressors are used with coloring the sound in mind, in a mastering situation what you want is transparency. Maximus offers 4 user definable compression curves and complete. I use it for two things mainly: Multiband Compression and as a de-essing plugin. I found the the same thing using maximus until I discovered the soft saturation. Maximus excels equally well as a final mastering plugin or as a per-track effect. The one thing I haven't been able to find a stock equivalent for is a transparent mastering limiter, something like a fabfilter pro-L I tried the fruity limiter but it would totally crush the audio before reaching any level of acceptable loudness. I'm trying to do mastering using only stock FL plugins.
